For Centuries Asian Health specialists and healers have been aware of the benefits that come with sleeping on buckwheat hull pillows and such pillows enjoy widespread use in many Asian countries.
The small size and uneven shape of buckwheat hulls make them a perfect pillow filling: There is a constant shifting of the buckwheat hull material as you move while air freely passes through the organic filling. This constant ventilation of buckwheat hull pillows keeps them fluffy and fresh.
Traditional feather pillows tend to lose their shape as the night progresses. Regular foam and polyester pillows keep their shape but cannot accommodate individual needs for support. Our buckwheat hull pillows will neither flatten during the night nor force you to shift your head and neck in search of comfort. Their organic buckwheat hull filling will adjust itself to the individual form and weight of your head, while giving continued support throughout the night. Buckwheat hulls are considered hypo-allergenic and will not house dust mites as long as the pillow is being used and the hulls regularly shift. Our buckwheat hulls are 99% dust free after passing through a dust ventilator. Regular use of our buckwheat hull pillows with their complete support for spinal alignment will soothe muscle tensions, offer relief from shoulder/neck tightness, and prevent headaches. Buckwheat hulls are temperate and do not naturally take on heat in the summer or cold in the winter. However, when placed for some minutes in the microwave oven, they will retain that heat and make a wonderful filling for organic Heatpacks.
Good quality buckwheat hulls will not break down or disintegrate, even after years of use. However, you might notice after a few years that your pillow feels a bit less high than it did when you first received it. The reason for this slight change in height is that the hulls lose a bit of their elasticity after holding the weight of your head for so many nights. We use 3-dimensional (intact) hulls that come with quite a bit of bounce to begin with (flat, destroyed hulls feel much harder). After a few years the hulls lose some of the strength and the filling gives a little.
At that point you just take out a few pounds (maybe half of the filling) and replace it with fresh hulls. This re-fluffs the pillow and makes it good to go for another 3-5 years. There is no need to replace the entire filling (unless you accidentally leave your pillow out in the rain or pour your morning coffee over it as you trip over toys left by your toddler or favorite cat....).
You can buy our buckwheat hulls in loose form, to refill old pillows or to simply re-fluff current ones. The hulls are sold in bags of 3 lbs. Our hulls are 100% certified organic, grown and harvested in the US.
